My son and I were walking along a path, he enjoys walking backwards, he asked me if he was facing the past or the future.

I thought about the idea of walking along a path being related to life, and said to him you are facing the opposite to the way we are traveling so you can see where we have been, I am looking forward to where we are going, and we are both traveling along together so therefore we are both in the prescent.
